Design Optimization of Composite Lay-up Sequence and Orientation to Achieve Minimum Weight for Racing Seat

Composites have proved their usefulness in the automotive industry during recent years. Many automobile companies use them different parts to reduce weight without hampering strength. In a composite material, Lay-up sequence and orientation highly affects properties of laminate. Therefore, it is important perform design optimization on component achieve high strength minimum weight. This paper deals with lay-up for Racing Seat using finite element analysis. Different sequences laminates including, cross-ply [0/90]n, angle-ply [±α]n, [0/90/±α]n are analysed. The sequence, ply number optimized material carbon fibre/Epoxy. Driver’s ergonomics impact sustainability considered constraints optimization. were based 95th percentile male 5th female rule. Force analysis performed seat according SFI 39.2 evaluate requirement. Finite racing via commercial code ANSYS capabilities Composite PrepPost (ACP) form desired lay-up. A classical lamination theory; including Puck’s failure criterion first-ply failure. divided into three portions layers considering values specific nature acting forces; which resulted thicknesses regions. results show that all angles Angle-ply laminate considered, an angle 45⁰ provides more optimum design. obtained 10.15 kg.
